We were in Aliceville, Alabama at a blues festival and we were hungry.

Half my family is from the South and when I get back down there the deep southern comes out in my accent. Suddenly I remember phrases from long ago visits with the grandparents and start dropping endings and drawling my words like the alphabet only has 15 letters.

Yes’m and Nosir are always on the tip of my tongue.

So there we were early in the morning after a late night of festival partying, ready to order breakfast at a little diner in Aliceville.
“I’ll have the eggs over medium and fried potatoes ma’am,” I drawled to the waitress.
“What kinda mate you want, hunney?” she drawled right back at me.
Everything in my mind stopped for a moment as I considered her question. A mate. Well, a tall, funny, kind, handsome kinda guy is the mate I want, I decided. Did she have one in reserve?
“We got baykin, ham, little sawsages, sawsage paddy…?” she questioned kindly as she ticked off the options. Rats, I thought. “No mate ma’am,” I sighed.
.
Did I mention we’d been up late?
I love telling you about this conversation because it reminds me how important it is to make sure you’re in the same conversation when you’re talking to someone. Do you really understand what they’re talking about or has your mind leapt to some other conclusion? It’s always ok to get it clear.
And PS, I did find that mate I was thinking about at breakfast in Aliceville. Married him too.
