Are you a visual person? If you are, you have a hard time not seeing things. Around here there are people who can’t possibly be the visual type. Their front yard is strewn with torn open trash bags and crushed beer cans. Or broken-down cars, washing machines, refrigerators, and tetanus incrusted swing sets.
No doubt these are the same people who are still throwing their fast-food trash out the window as they barrel down the road. They can’t be looking at the beautiful countryside with spring wildflowers lining the woods. Or the quarry ponds of green water surrounded by chiseled limestone blocks.
No, they’re heaving their meth making bottles into the woods, dumping their old mattresses on the roadside, and throwing cigarette butts out the window.
It must be easier to ignore your trashy mess if you’re not a visual person. But even if you don’t see it anymore, it’s ghosting your subconscious. It’s not going away until the mess does. The ugliness seeps into your very being. It’s worse if you’re a visual person partnered with someone who isn’t. You always feel an uncomfortable tension, resentment too.
I’m a visual person who once lived with someone who was oblivious. I found rusted tools and kitchen utensils I’d been missing in the yard and the weeds. Empty planting pots thrown under the house and into the woods. Rags partially dug into the ground. Rotting and broken boards forgotten by the garage. Half-filled, mold encrusted coffee cups perched on stumps.
And that’s just a tip of the visual incompatibility iceberg.
I’m not saying you should landscape and manicure your place unless that makes you happy. You may have to cope with chaos for a while. You may have to live without much money or time and scrape by to make it all work. But trash all over your place on a permanent basis is never going to lift your mood.
It’s nicer to see your place and feel a visual rush of calm and relaxation. Doesn’t matter how modest it is or how poor you are, it just needs to feel like home. And good visual just makes a home sweeter.
