Oof getting older. Remember those days when you were a kid and you’d complain to your parents that you were bored? They always replied with exasperation followed by a list of things you could do but didn’t want to do. Or they told you to go outside and not bother them.
Have you noticed that the older you get the faster time seems to whiz by? Suddenly it’s a big birthday and you’re getting a bouquet of prunes and black balloons. People send you cards that tell you how wrinkly or creaky or deaf you are. Yeah. Ha. Ha. But one thing you’re not when you get older is bored. There’s barely enough time in a day to do all the things you couldn’t do when you were working and parents.
I remember my grandfather Poppa’s change after my grandmother died. He was really sad and bored and then suddenly you couldn’t get him on the phone. Turns out at 85+ he was the only one who still had a driver’s license. He was out every day and night partying. Partying for him was going to church events. Plus he drove to bingo, the cafeteria for Sunday brunch, to the Moose or Eagles for recreation.
He played cards with his pals, visited friends at their houses and ferried them around for groceries, shopping, lunch, and doctor’s appointments. He was a single, good-looking guy with a license and all the ladies were impressed and feeling flirty. He blossomed and radiated joy. Poppa loved being single, retired, and accountable to no one. Life was good.
My point is that there’s no reason for you to sit at home and moan about getting older. There’s no better time, actually this is the only time left, to get out there and have as much joy as possible. Your life is a gift. Go have fun with it.
