We were all tired, it was late and the drive home seemed long. Ken was driving, my daughter Dakota riding shotgun, sister Mary and I drowsing in the back seat of the CRV.
“There’s a bunny,” Dakota says quietly as we drive the country road. Instantly I’m awake and alert. Ken doesn’t slow down.
“Bunny,” Dakota says then, “bunny, bunny,” more urgently with a tremor of panic. Mary jerks fully awake tensely asking “What bunny, where?”
“BUNNY,” Dakota shouts, “BUNNY! BUNNY! BUNNY!” she screams as the rabbit runs into the road. Distraught, she throws her hands over her face screaming, “NOOOOOOOOOO!!!” and as if on cue, Mary and I scream with her. Then we all dissolve into snot-running, pants-peeing, helpless laughter. Ken wipes his eyes and keeps driving… oh and there was no bunny thump of death. No bunnies were harmed on this drive home.
