I got scolded by the return book librarian. Oh the shame!
Ok, my book was 2 days late but a scolding? I wasn’t allowed to renew the book even though there weren’t any holds on it. Reminds me of Mrs. Schumaker from grade school. Mrs. S in nasal voice: “You break the rules my dear, you must pay the price. It’s the principle of the thing. Now go sit down.” Ouch.
What’s really ridiculous is how I reacted. Just like I did when I was 8 years old. Hanging head, guilty look, promise to…wait I didn’t promise not to do it again. I said, “Are you kidding me?” Nope, she wasn’t. I had to wait until they processed the book and put it back on the shelf before I could check it out again.
That was the end of our conversation but you know I’m all about conversations and social interactions and I wanted to know more. Was she tired of playing nice? Was she sick of hassling with people returning books late? Was she grumpy ‘cause she stayed up late making wild woopie with the cute info librarian?
I was all ready to go deep with this when the woman behind me started tapping her foot. I moved aside thinking I’d dive in later but after three other people I was feeling like a stalker so I left.
Moments like this can really put you off your game so I took myself to lunch. I had a lovely conversation with my server which made both of us happy. Still, I wonder about that librarian. I hope she really did stay up late having fun.
Ok spill the beans. Have you been scolded as an adult and reacted like your childhood self? Leave a comment below and let me know. I can’t be alone in this. Want to bring a chuckle to someone’s day? Share this blog and subscribe to my Dream Big, Reach High, Laugh a Lot newsletter.
