When you live in the country 30 minutes from town, there’s a good chance something will leap, fly, scurry, slither or saunter across the road in front of you. Deer are a real problem.
Coming home one evening, I was just crossing an area of open fields when a huge buck leapt out in front of the car and slipped on the pavement.
I slammed on the brakes and missed him. To this day I don’t know how. He was up and away in a flash. As I was recovering, shaking from the close encounter, BAM!! A second buck ran into the back side of my car.
I couldn’t believe it. He was stunned but recovered quickly and leapt the fence to join his death-wish-by-roadway pal.
My car was severely dented with two distinctive dents in the upper right rear panel. That damn deer! Did he not register there was a large CRV in front of him? Both those deer must have been really frightened, guilty of distracted running or left their brains at home.
This is the second time I’ve been hit. Actually I’ve never hit a deer, they keep hitting me. The first time was scarier. I was in my convertible and a doe jumped out of the bushes and onto the hood, getting caught in the flip-up headlight.
I stomped on the brakes tossing her off onto the pavement. She was stunned but before I could get out of the car, she was on her feet and into the woods. I started after her only to think, wait.
If she was hurt there wasn’t anything I could do to help her except call the DNR. An injured deer can be dangerous too. Then I caught a glimpse of her leaping through the woods so I figured she wasn’t too badly damaged.
My convertible however now had a permanent wink. The undamaged headlight would flip back to the closed position, but the damaged one just stayed up. It was a fun, sassy look for the little red convertible until I got it fixed.
Ken reminded me of another strange deer moment.
We were driving into town when a squirrel ran out into the road. As they often do, it changed its mind and and turned to run back to the edge of the road. Suddenly a deer materialized in the exact spot and the squirrel vanished. We didn’t see the squirrel run or move. It just turned into a deer before our very eyes! I think both Ken and I swore as we anticipated impact. But, the deer-squirrel managed to leap into the woods and we were once again saved. Although we did see the deer leap off into the woods, we never did see any sign of the squirrel.
