It rained last week and then sleeted and snowed. Then it snowed again and the temp dropped to 9 degrees. Net result was the mile gravel road down to our house was a luge run.
.
Three of the neighbor guys got together and spread gravel on the steepest parts of the hills and curves but even now it’s an AWD/FWD only experience. No one coming down in front wheel or god forbid rear wheel drive will be leaving before April.
.
Then the weather warmed up to 34 degrees and the sun melted some of the ice. You’d think this would be a good thing but the melted ice water flowed into the areas that didn’t get any sun making them an icy slip ‘n slide. My AWD successfully made it down the road only to start sliding sideways toward a telephone pole. “S&^*! I’m gonna hit that pole!” I screamed. Then the antilock brakes kicked in and I missed it.
.
Shaken, I pulled up to the house and parked, opened the door and zip! I skated backward on both feet down the drive! I didn’t fall; a minor miracle. Now I was in the middle of an ice floe with zero traction staring at the grill of my car. I considered crawling up the drive. Instead I balanced my entire weight over my hips, bent my knees and started doing a bowlegged, pigeon-toed walk back to the car (thanks for the tip elderly Detroit ladies).
.
A few setbacks later, I grabbed the car door handle only to once again lose my footing. I hung from the handle until I could get my legs under me. Difficult when your legs and the ice will not cooperate with each other. Finally I opened the door, plopped into the seat, backed the car up to the door of the house and unloaded my purchases. Unfortunately, our garage is some distance from the house. There was no way I was leaving the car out in the weather. I can’t even reach the entire windshield for scraping. It was going to be an interesting walk from the garage back to the house.
.
I got smart walking up from the garage. I walked on the edge of the drive in the crunchy snow. This put me in a poor position to transfer over to the sanded section to reach the front door. Slowly I negotiated my steps until zoom! Down the drive I went in a backward, butt first skating move. This was getting really tiresome. I clawed my way back up toward the house, secure in the knowledge that I was going to get on my knees and crawl up there if I slipped again. But the goddess of traction was with me and I made it to the porch.
This little adventure reminded me that with enough perseverance, confidence and humor, you can get where you need to go. Even if you have to crawl to get there.
