I have a little red convertible story. Calm down, Prince fans. It’s not a little red corvette story. Crap, now I’ll be humming that song.

My daughter was here for a month. Home for her is NYC, a place she adores. So interesting because she’s such an outdoorsy kind of woman who grew up loving the woods. She’s not afraid of snakes and spiders can start a fire from nothing and never met a tree she didn’t want to climb. No joke, one time she wrapped her arms and legs around a tree and pulled herself straight up the trunk with her tremendous strength.

While she was here, she decided she wanted to learn to drive my red Miata convertible.

I tried teaching her to drive a stick before with moderate success, but this time we had a month to practice. I had her practice stopping on our gravel road going uphill. Asked her to get the car started from a dead stop and not kill the engine or spray gravel everywhere. Qualified me as MOM = mean ol’ mom.

Ken said I was taking the fun out of driving a stick. That going uphill on gravel, fishtailing and flinging gravel everywhere was part of the experience.

Before she left she’d mastered it and we went for a little jaunt. She handled all the gears, smoothly downshifting and using the clutch like a pro, stopping on a hill with minimal backsliding. Her two top motivators for learning to drive the convertible were the excitement of learning a new skill and the joy of driving a snazzy, sexy little red convertible. I took pictures (see above).

I put about 2,000 miles on the car a year, garaging it in the winter and not bringing it out until all the dirt, salt and sand is off the road in the spring. I hate to drive it in the rain. I baby it. Someday I’ll have to sell it because oh my god, getting in and especially out of it requires body contortions worthy of a circus performer. Bet I know someone who might want to buy it from me.
