The hummingbirds are back looking around the porch for their feeders. We enjoy watching the hummer wars as they fight over the nectar and the territory. Hummers are beautiful, aggressive little monsters and in full summer it’s like a battle zone of tiny intense soldiers vying for the prize.
When we sit out on our porch for happy hour, they troll my bright colored shirts for nectar. It’s disconcerting to be eye-to-eye with these aggressive little beauties, their needle beaks pointed with dangerous intent.
Our cat Jack can attest to that.
Our feeders hang above our wide porch rail and one summer Jack decided he was interested in grabbing one of the little buggers for a cat snack. He popped up on the railing, watching the little birds intently and just as he stretched up to bat at his prey, the hummer dive-bombed him.
Other hummers joined in, as Jack bobbed and weaved like Ali. They drove him down from the rail but that wasn’t the end of their outrage. As he sulked down the porch, they dove at him repeatedly driving him under a chair.
He must have fallen asleep, forgetting his adventure, but when he wandered out to check on the cat food status, the hummers were back on him. He dove under the deck, reemerging only in the safety of night.
The whole ordeal put a permanent end to his thoughts of a hummer cat snack. He’s never bothered them since but still looks at them warily each spring. Is he wondering about a hummer’s memory?
