I’m no longer “with it.” I’ve become an old fogie. Has this happened to you?
Fair warning: there are graphic references to strong profanity in this post.
I like listening to lots of different kinds of music. At home it’s blues, jazz, zydeco or classical. When I’m in the gym they stream current music which is okay with me. The trouble began when new coaches took over the early morning slots. I’m not good with strong profanity laced music at 6-7am. I’m just want to lift weights, remember form, and feel strong, not angry.
This kind of music makes me regret I work out there. And being a singer and a lyricist, I hear every word. The former coaches would jump for a music change if profanity started but that doesn’t happen anymore. The current coach is barely over 21 and she and the person who works at the desk are oblivious.
But the rest of us are a mixed crowd that’s 20-40 years older than the coaches. We’re uncomfortable with the musical hostility blasted through the sound system. We can put up with some swearing but draw the line at repeated F-bombs first thing in the morning. I’ve complained before but last Wednesday really set me off. There were two songs back-to-back that dropped the F-bomb in every line.
One song then added a line about someone being a “f-word n-word”, followed by “that f-word b-word gonna get it.” Yikes. I headed over to the coach and asked nicely, “Please change the music so we don’t have to listen to someone screaming “motherf**'” at us while we work out.” The coach looked at me like a deer in the headlights. “I don’t listen to the lyrics,” she said.
“Well, I DO,” said the woman next to me. The coach changed the music and two of the other clients let out sighs of relief saying, “Whew, glad that’s over.” This Wednesday it happened again. Repeated swearing and wincing from the early morning clients.
It’s times like these you need to step up and speak out. I did and I’m proud of myself for asking without losing my f-word temper.
